For happy confident learners
Our programme caters for children ages 3 months to 5 years.
At First Steps Ponsonby we believe that our most important role is to provide a nurturing environment in which the children will feel safe and secure, interactions that are positive, challenging and foster happy relationships. Through this we believe our children, their families and Whanau will trust, grow and share in a unique partnership with us. These relationships, along with an enriching stimulating environment,
help us to extend children’s strengths, interests and developmental
needs.
We acknowledge and promote New Zealand’s bi-cultural heritage by having a good understanding of Te Reo Maori and Tikanga Maori. We reflect the unique place of Maori as Tangata Whenua and principle of partnership as acknowledged in the Treaty of Waitangi. The cultures of our families are valued and shared within the Centre. First Steps Ponsonby has a balance of free choice and structure and strives to remain flexible in an ever-changing environment.
Ultimately we aim to provide a caring environment which nurtures children to reach their full potential as competent and confident learners.
Our babies’ teachers are passionate about providing a safe, nurturing environment for your baby to develop and grow.
ERO loved our interactions and here are their supporting comments:
“Children are open, friendly and inquiring. They are confident communicators and enjoy the opportunities for play with their peers. Adults model social skills effectively and encourage children’s learning with supportive interactions and affirming feedback. Centre routines are well established and children’s independence and self-management skills are acknowledged and supported.”
- ERO report, July 2010
Our preschool programme focuses on preparing your child with all the skills they will need for school.
The ERO noted:
“Literacy and numeracy activities have a high profile throughout the centre. All aspects of literacy and mathematics are valued by teachers and children and incorporated into activities. The learning environment is print rich with visual prompts that include pictures, words, numbers and letters. Children are enthusiastically developing early reading and writing skills.”
