We offer a transition to school programme for our preschool children,
which we incorporate into everyday practice, to assist with their next step in
the child’s learning journey. When our preschool children turn five, they feed
into local schools such as, Knighton Normal School, Hillcrest
Normal School and Hamilton East
School.
In
2011, we as a centre were involved in a Core Education programme focusing on
Transition to school.
We
believe that at Kids to Five Dey Street,
the most important thing a child can develop throughout their early childhood
years is a high self esteem and a belief in themselves as being competent,
capable learners. We strive to provide an educational environment that promotes
biculturalism and multiculturalism. All children are encouraged to form
relationships with their teachers and their peers based on respect and positive
social interaction with others.
We
have a full team of qualified teachers, who are passionate about providing the
best possible learning environment for children. Our teachers know how to
provide a wide range of learning experiences which promotes literacy, numeracy and
other core areas of learning though everyday activities.
At
Kids to Five Dey Street
we aim to help the children grow in a healthy, happy environment, with the
knowledge that they are a valued member of our centre and wider community. We acknowledge
parents and whānau as the children’s first and best teachers and understand the
importance of maintaining open and positive relationships.
Our
centre cook provides nutritious meals prepared everyday on site and where we
can we use vegetables grown from our vegetable garden at the centre. All the
under 2’s get fresh mashed vegetables with the main meal daily.
Children
learn best through play, so we set up challenges and age appropriate activities
for different stages of development. We also provide activities that extend the
children’s current interest and promote their well being, independence and life
skills.
We
encourage outings into the local community such as visiting Hamilton East, the
City Centre, library, Hamilton
Gardens and walking to
local parks. Making links to the wider community and centre life are valued and
important ways of learning.
All children are encouraged to use their already
developing self-help skills and are offered a range of opportunities to extend
their independence, such as feeding themselves at mealtimes and wiping their
hands and faces thereafter. Programme planning is child initiated and focused
on children’s interests.
Our
Education Review in 2010 was a very successful review, here are some of the
comments that were shared in the report:
"Respectful
and affirming relationships are experienced between children, staff, parents,
and
whānau.
Teachers value their relationships with parents, and together with parents,
have established an inclusive atmosphere where children’s diverse cultural
backgrounds are acknowledged and welcomed.
The
centre provides highly functional, physically and emotionally safe, interactive
and interesting learning environments for infants, toddlers and young children."

Parent Feedback:
"Thank you: to Kelly for your gentle reassurance and for being someone that Blake misses when he is at home with us, to Cathy for your support, kindness and cuddles, to Anne for giving Blake tastier, more imaginative and more nutritious meals than he often gets at home, to Jeshika for distracting Blake with paints in the morning, to Caroline for your sound advice, kind words, to Debbie for your warm smiles every morning. To everyone who has worked to make this centre the kind of place that Blake is desperate to get in the morning and talks about when he gets home" - March 2012
