Welcome to Kids to Five on Maui St
High quality learning, fun and laughter is what you will see when
you walk into any one of our four rooms
at Kids to Five Maui. The smiles on the children’s faces as they enter into their rooms is a great comfort to parents as they drop their children off, because they know that they are going to have a fun filled day of learning.
Children are drawn to the activities that are set up, including arts, literacy,
music and movement, technology, outdoor play, construction and many more fun activities that take place under the
watchful eye of our experienced and qualified teachers who help to make the learning environment exciting
for the children.
Nursery
In our Nursery we focus on being a home away from home. Our teachers build positive, loving relationships with babies and their families to help make the transition from home to the centre as easy as possible. Together our nursery teachers have over 30 years experience in working with infants and toddlers and all have a passion for working with children and their families. We promote children’s learning through offering a programme based around children’s interests. On a daily basis we offer a variety of learning experiences from painting and messy play, to music and movement and outdoor pl
ay to name a few. We have easy indoor, outdoor flow and our babies enjoy spending time enjoying the different sensory play in the outdoor environment including sand, water and grass.
Tweenies
Tweenies is that exciting age of exploration and rapid development, where our teachers help to develop and build self help and independence shills. Teachers are in tune with the children’s interests and develop and provide a programme which incorporates each individual child’s needs.
Some of the recent areas of focus we have had in the Tweenies room include science and nature, social relationships, exploring world cultures and fostering independence. Some of the learning experiences that were a highlight were taste testing with sweet and sour sherbet, sinking and floating, ice melting, volcanoes and water geysers, cultural dress up days, international morning tea, a trip to the paradise gardens collection at Hamilton gardens, Rugby world cup dress up day and a trip to the local park to play rippa rugby. We are looking forward to the warmer weather to enjoy water play, gardening and planting and walks to our neighborhood pet store.
Tots
Independence, choices, manners – these are only a small selection of the important things our tots are discovering in their room. You will also find a team of enthusiastic and experienced staff who respect each child’s individuality. They are knowledgeable and supportive of many different culture
s which are evident throughout the room and during their mat times. Numeracy, Literacy, Te Reo and self-help skills are all incorporated on a daily basis through play-based activities and through structured mat times. Individual news times were incorporated into the programme to help encourage participation and self-confidence. Name recognition is encouraged through the children ‘signing in’ with their name tags. The children in the tot room have a set resting time; however, those who don’t sleep are provided with activities to stimulate their imaginations and creativity. These activities are planned to reflect the children’s interests. After working on all these valuable skills within the tot room they become well equipped for their next journey… the Kindy room!
Kindy
In our inspiring Kindy room our main focus is around school readiness and independence. With the support of our local school we have developed an exciting curriculum with a variety of experiences that we believe caters for all our children. Phonics is huge part of our day; with the support of a programme called ‘letterland’ and the role of the teachers the children are well on their way to learning all the alphabet letter names and sounds. We support an emergent curriculum – this is a style of teaching that presents children with the gift of discovering the world around them by encouraging them to explore life through their own interests and passions; it is ‘child lead’ as opposed to ‘teacher directed’ learning. A unique highlight of our week is our lunch box days, where children bring in a packed lunch from home and the teachers support them in selecting their food and making it last the ‘school’ day. Controlled rough and tumble play i
s encouraged by all the staff and we are always on the look out for innovative ideas in doing this. The children are fortunate to have dedicated teachers including a valuable male teacher as role models. We are often out and about in the community whether it is weekly trips to the local public library (travelling by public bus) or visiting the pet shop, park or local school. If you see us out and about come up and say hi! – We are wearing the bright orange safety vests!
