Local MP visits Parnell First Steps
10 November 2010
Nikki Kaye the MP for Auckland Central visited the First Steps childcare in Ngaoho Place, Parnell on Saturday during their successful open day on Saturday (Nov 6).
The centre has recently had a refurbishment, extensive play ground improvements including a new sand pit, Autex sound proofing and significant new resourcing.
Nikki was given a tour of the baby care centre by Jenny and then was shown how toddlers and pre-schoolers play and learn in preparation for school. Numerous play stations were set up with activities for visiting children. Vanilla, the centre's own fairy, was in hand for face painting.
Charmaine Stuart the centre manager showed Nikki portfolios of the children to show the development in their learning. She also explained to Nikki how what looks like play is essential early learning and the start of an understanding of curricula like maths, science and so on.
The centre has a very diverse cultural group with children from Sweden, Africa, Nepal, Indian and many parts of Asia.
