Our Philosophy

Our centres aim to provide the best child care and pre school education in New Zealand. This means good communication with parents as well as children. It means the best staff we can find, and the most imaginative, stimulating and appropriate programmes for each child whatever their age.

The Environment

Choosing us means your child will be in a safe caring environment where your child will learn to feel at home with other children and enjoy learning and playing activities geared to the individual needs of your baby or child.

Our learning programmes are based on Te Whariki, the early childhood curriculum developed by the New Zealand Ministry of Education, while incorporating a solid understanding of today’s educational approaches.

Caring

Children love praise, respect and understanding. It gives them self-respect, confidence and an enjoyment of life. And that’s what we want to give them too.

Our centres aim to provide well-designed and well-organised facilities and a friendly attractive environment. Combined with well-trained enthusiastic staff these factors mean a relaxed atmosphere for children to expand their skills, develop the gifts of cooperation, and enjoy friendships.

From these secure bases, each child can learn about living in the world. We aim to nurture as well as educate and stimulate. We care about our children and we love our work.

What is Montessori?

The Montessori method was founded by Italian doctor Maria Montessori. The first Montessori school opened in Rome in 1907 and the philosophy and method has since spread around the world.

The Montessori philosophy is based on direct observation of the child. Dr Montessori recognised that the first six years of life forms the basis of character and personality, and so based her methods on exposing the child to a stimulating learning environment with opportunities for growth through self-discovery. This is what you’ll find in our centres.

Learning is founded on each child’s individual potential and enthusiasm.

The Environment

In a Montessori environment you’ll find an atmosphere of peace, generosity and co-operation. We have qualified and specially trained Montessori teachers who are committed to encouraging a child’s natural curiosity and desire to learn.

You’ll find children in mixed aged classes learning from each other, spontaneously choosing activities and at the same time guided and encouraged by their teachers. They learn to respect themselves and others and their environment, and in so doing also develop self-confidence, concentration and a sense of order and harmony.

What We Do

Montessori environments aren’t like regular classrooms where children are taught as a group. Individual differences are encouraged. The environment you’ll find has specially designed equipment and materials to meet children’s needs. Our method aims to provide practical activities as a link between home and our centres.

It is also planned to develop enjoyment of the senses and skills through the use of colour, sound, language, and using activities like puzzles and games, stories and maps, globes and books.

History, geography, music, art and drama are also part of the child’s day, depending on their ages. Measuring, comparing, understanding texture, volume, weight, simple mathematics and simple science are all provided in the context of the child’s abilities to absorb and enjoy them.

In a Montessori environment your children will find:

  • fun and friendship
  • stimulation and security
  • freedom to be themselves
  • opportunities to learn
  • teachers they can trust
Montessori aims to give a child the opportunity to learn independence, self-discipline, high selfesteem, a love of learning, good social skills, problem-solving skills, consideration for others, respect for their environment, enhanced powers of concentration, and solid skills for language and maths.

Our New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum ‘Te Whaariki’ is integrated and practised within our Montessori curriculum. We also ensure that the New Zealand curriculum framework requirements are met, as our centres cater for children until six years old.

Our Approach

Many parents are striving to provide the best possible life for their families and sometimes this means placing the care of your child in the hands of others. School's Out is based on the premise that we are privileged to be given the honour of caring for other people's children.

It is a privilege that is not taken lightly. Our School's Out centres are special places where we know children will have fun whilst they develop and grow. Our philosophies, activities, structure and staff are chosen carefully in order to reassure parents that each child is given the care, attention and encouragement they deserve. All School's Out centres are accredited by Child, Youth and Family Service and as such are audited on a regular basis to ensure that the comprehensive Standards of Approval are being met.

School's Out is a place for you child to relax and enjoy themselves. There is no compulsion to participate in any particular activity. Children are presented with a choice of activities with staff guiding the children to make it a memorable experience.

Affordable Childcare

If your combined family income is less than $1274 gross per week, subject to WINZ approval, you are entitled to a WINZ subsidy. The more children you have the gross amount goes up. For example, if you have two children you can earn between $1634 and $1698. So you could be paying as little as $10.96 per day for 8 hours of childcare.

What Your Child is Learning

When you drop your child off at her early childhood centre and watch her dash off to the sand pit or the dough table, do you wonder if she learns anything all day, and will the sand pit and the dough table prepare her for starting school?

The answer is absolutely yes! What looks like child’s play is actually the basis for a lifetime’s learning. If they don’t learn these things as pre-schoolers, they are actually already behind their age-group when they start school.

Sand & Water Play
Starting with sand and water play - this is where the development of maths and science concepts start. Children weigh and measure and begin to understand volume. As children play alongside their peers they develop relationship skills, taking turns problem solving and sharing, as they see something that looks like fun, and want to play with it themselves.

Block Building and Puzzles
Block building and puzzles are an important step in cognitive development, meaning that as children experience the world around them, they form pictures in their minds of what they see. Playing with blocks gives them the opportunity to re-create these pictures in concrete form. To be able to do this is an important step towards abstract thinking. Blocks also teach co-ordination, children have to manipulate, stack, balance, lift and arrange them. It is great for hand and arm muscles and hand and eye co-ordination.

Literature
Story telling and books from an early age encourage children to explore a world of make believe, fantasy as well as facts. Reading books and looking at pictures also helps foster a love of books, and develop the understanding that the words tell a story. Exposure to lots of opportunities to read books helps children in developing the necessary early literacy skills necessary to support their reading development at school. All our centres have quiet library areas for children to help themselves to books.

Dramatic Play
Children have an innate sense of make believe so they love our dramatic playtime. It’s an opportunity for them to express themselves, share experiences and learn to socially interact with others, making sense of the world they live in. This is a great time for children to explore, express and role model emotions and feelings.

Outdoor Play
Climbing, running and jumping, throwing balls help children develop gross motor skills and build muscles in their arms and legs. Other activities like catching and throwing, kicking or batting balls develop hand eye co-ordination and develop the left/right brain connections that will support future brain development and learning.

Group time
Group time is organised so children learn how to respond to the needs of others while in a group. This can involve the whole group, smaller groups for story and language development, music and movement, literacy, sharing, turn taking and much more.
